Anshul's Hindi Song For Children (Anshul.mp3 v1 by Anshul Bawa)

Anshul Bawa is the 14-year old son of Dr Seema Bawa from Thapar University, Patiala. He sang this witty song for my 3-year-old son, Maadhyam, during our visit to Thapar University. I recorded it on my mobilephone. Here is a photo of all of us listening to Anshul: http://www.flickr.com/photos/niyam/2494130681/in/set-72157605070048600/

Permission to upload this file granted to me by his mother, Dr. Seema Bawa, who is an ardent Gnu/Linux and FOSS supporter. Find out more about this trip here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/niyam/sets/72157605070048600/

Audio: Tanpura (tanpura.mp3 v1 by Janani Gopalakrishnan)

Short recording of Tanpura. When played in loop, it makes for a good background for audio recordings.

Soundscape: Bharatanatyam foot-taps (footbeat.mp3 v1 by Janani Gopalakrishnan)

Thanks to my sister Purnima Balasubramanian, a Bharatanatyam dancer, who permitted me to record the sound of her foot-taps. She's the artist here, not me :)

Soundscapes: Wind Chime (wind_chime.mp3 v1 by Janani Gopalakrishnan)

Melody arises, as the breeze plays with metal. Yet, I find it a daunting task to avoid the cawing of crows and the honking of horns in the background, whenever I record something. One of the banes of living in the city, I guess. Any suggestions as to how we can remove the honk in the background? I tried recording this 15 times, and every time a vehicle's honking interrupted the chimes.

Soundscapes: Rain drain (drain_mp3.mp3 v1 by Janani Gopalakrishnan)

Everything about rain is beautiful (perhaps not the soggy roads). Even the sound of water gurgling down the sloping roof as it rains.

Soundscapes: Rain (rain_mp3.mp3 v1 by Janani Gopalakrishnan)

It rained in Chennai today. A sudden short burst of summer showers. Impossible to capture the fragrance that emanates from the sizzling ground when it starts raining suddenly, but I decided to make an attempt at recording the fuzzy sound of rain as it cascades down in sheets. Mind you, this is not the "pitter patter" kind of rain.

Soundscapes: Dawn (dawn_mp3.mp3 v1 by Janani Gopalakrishnan)

A bright new day dawns in the city. Somewhere in between this recording, I think the flower-seller is heard above the music of the birds. Vying for attention, or making a living, I don't know. Just wish she had not intruded the birds' symphony. Will try for a better recording soon, but is there a quiet dawn in the city, I wonder.

Bhangra Junglee (BhangraJunglee.mp3 v0.1 by Niyam Bhushan)

Hints of Indian Punjabi Bhangra with textures of african percussion. Quite interesting, very hypnotic. Here is rhythm that belongs to the world beat. Simba-e-Punjab.
